Bombarda Rum - Blog post by Thomas Heie Nielsen

Bombarda Rum - Blog post by Thomas Heie Nielsen

Blog post by Thomas Heie Nielsen

I am tasting two bottlings today, though there are more in the series.

The first is Bombarda Falconet Blended Dark Caribbean Rum 70 cl 43%

This award-winning rum is a blend of some interesting components from the Dominican Republic, Panama, Trinidad and Guyana. The rum has matured in ex-bourbon casks for between 8 and 15 years, after which it was selected, blended and bottled at 43%. No chill filtration and no added colour.

Colour:
Pale golden amber.

Nose:
Light citrus meets freshly polished leather sofa along with mild spices. Soft and welcoming on the nose.

Palate:
A lightly sweet impression combined with a little citrus, nuts, green grapes and spice. The cask influence is restrained but present. The finish is medium and it does not seem as though sugar has been added. A light dryness at the end. An interesting blend and an excellent rum for the money.

The next rum I am tasting is Bombarda Sovereign XO 22 Single Cask Dark Guyana Rum 75 cl 43%

This rum is the second in the Ship of the Line series, a small batch release where very particular casks are chosen and bottled on their own, without being blended with other rum components. Sovereign XO 22 was distilled in Demerara's Wooden Coffey Enmore Still. The rum first spent around 9 years in a former armagnac cask and was then tropically aged for at least 12 years in white oak casks, most likely ex-bourbon. This is premium dark rum to be enjoyed whether you are an admiral, a pirate, a seasoned rum drinker or a beginner. It comes presented in a handsome gold cannon that certainly draws attention.

About the still: the Enmore Wooden Continuous Coffey, also known as the EHP Wooden Still, is the last fully functioning example of its kind in the world today. The technology behind this old and unique apparatus was patented in 1832 by the Irish excise officer Aeneas Coffey, who also gave his name to the still. This Enmore still is still the original and last survivor from Enmore Sugar Estate, founded around 200 years ago by Edward Henry Porter. Since 1880 it has produced a medium-bodied rum with a mild, fruity aroma, and its unique flavour is attributed to the wooden structure of the still. The Enmore still is among those supplying rum to the El Dorado brand.

Colour:
Medium golden amber.

Nose:
Sun-ripened blue plums, Madagascar vanilla, cream ring with caramel sauce, crème brûlée. A soft and very lovely embracing nose.

Palate:
This rum is remarkably lovely in the mouth. It is clearly a quality rum with some age on it. Well made and well composed. Soft and delicious. A quality glass for a comfortable evening and a great deal of pleasure. A good cigar rum, which can of course also be enjoyed without a cigar. Sweet baked apples, mild spices. A really lovely Enmore. The rum ends with a discreet dryness. Big glass.

There are 1,217 bottles of this single cask rum, which has no added colour, sugar or spices.

Enjoy the Bombarda Rum.
