Black Tears was Cuba's first spiced rum, and it still stands apart from the crowd by staying far less sweet than most competitors in the category.

    Expert description

Black Tears Spiced is a Cuban Spiced Rum flavoured with natural spices and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from the Vigia distillery in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, produced in a joint venture between the Norwegian company Island Rum Company and Zerus, the commercial arm of Cuba's state-owned sugar company Azcuba. Black Tears is marketed as Cuba's first spiced rum and sets itself apart from many other spiced rums through a low sugar content, typical of Cuban rum tradition, giving a more bittersweet than straightforwardly sweet profile.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Spices gently unfold under a cut of candied orange peel, with vanilla, cloves and nutmeg plus a hint of roasted coffee.

    Palate

Golden syrup, coffee, cocoa and a touch of peppery spice, with caramelised nuts, chocolate richness and gently oak-spiced wood.

    Finish

A gentle, mysterious sweetness of cocoa accompanies a punch of coffee, with a lingering, spiced trace of red chilli and more chocolate to mellow it.
