While most spiced rums lean on pure sweetness, Black Barrel goes the other way with a darker, more spiced and noticeably less sweet style.

    Expert Description

Old St. Croix Black Barrel Navy Spiced is a Spiced Rum-based Spirit Drink from the U.S. Virgin Islands, bottled at 40%.

Old St. Croix, formerly known as A.H. Riise, changed its name in June 2025. Black Barrel builds on the brand's naval rum heritage, but with a distinctly spiced profile inspired by classic mulled wine and Christmas spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Compared to other releases from the house, Black Barrel is one of the least sweet, making it a solid everyday rum for those who prefer more spice than sugar.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Mocha, walnuts and burnt figs, along with slightly burnt oak notes, intense spiced notes of vanilla and caramel, plus a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon.

    Palate

Christmas spices and dark chocolate in a deep and bold expression, full-bodied and potent with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and other classic mulled wine spices.

    Finish

Mocha returns and slowly tones down, warm and lingering with orange, vanilla, coffee and caramel.
