Stauning RØG is Stauning Whisky’s own Danish interpretation of a smoked whisky – a style that does not try to imitate the heavy, medicinal smoke profiles of Scotland, but instead creates its own expression built on subtlety, balance and depth. The smoke is present from the very first aroma, yet it never dominates. It is designed to elevate the whisky rather than overpower it, resulting in an elegant Nordic smoke profile that leaves room for grain, cask character and fruit.
The whisky is rooted in Stauning’s West Jutland surroundings, where grain fields, sea air and heather‑covered landscapes set the tone. RØG is a double malt made from both malted barley and malted rye – 100% floor‑malted at the distillery and grown locally, all within cycling distance. The grain is kiln‑dried and smoked on site using a combination of Danish peat and heather, giving the whisky its characteristic soft campfire smoke and natural, earthy warmth. Distillation takes place in Stauning’s 24 small, direct‑fired copper pot stills, which produce a rich, oily and grain‑forward spirit.
Maturation primarily takes place in new American oak casks, adding structure, vanilla, caramelised oak and warm spices. A final finish in Madeira casks rounds the whisky off with soft fruit, gentle sweetness and added complexity. This combination gives RØG its distinctive balance between smoke, fruit and wood.
On the nose, you are met with gentle campfire smoke, roasted grain and a warm, inviting sweetness. The palate opens with mild stone fruits, caramelised oak and delicate spices, while the rye contributes a subtle spiciness and a full, rounded mouthfeel. The finish is lightly smoky, persistent and pleasantly smooth, with a gentle warmth that lingers without becoming heavy.
Stauning RØG is a whisky that demonstrates how Danish terroir, local ingredients and craftsmanship can create a smoke profile that is both recognisable and entirely its own. It is less massive than classic peated whiskies, but more balanced, more grain‑driven and distinctly Nordic in character.
