Old Perth – Palo Cortado - Blogpost by Luka Gottschalk

Old Perth – Palo Cortado - Blogpost by Luka Gottschalk

A new bottling of Old Perth has landed, this time a limited edition aged in Palo Cortado sherry casks. Palo Cortado sherry is often described as a cross between an Amontillado and an Oloroso, making it an incredibly sought-after type of sherry that is excellent for maturing whisky, even though it's not encountered very often. Therefore, I've been very excited to taste this bottling of Old Perth.

This concerns a blended malt, so we know that the bottle contains only malt whisky distilled in copper pot stills.
The distilleries involved remain a secret. It's bottled at full cask strength at 55.8% alcohol, un-chillfiltered, and naturally without added color.

The color appears inviting with a light amber hue.

The aroma reveals that there's a young whisky in the glass. It's powerful and sharp with incredibly concentrated notes of plums, almost reminiscent of a good plum brandy. Additionally, there are hints of tart berries, strawberry jam, and a scent of salted caramel.

The taste is fresh and full-bodied, continuing the aroma with notes of apricot, marzipan, and freshly ground black pepper.

The finish is on the shorter side, where small fruity notes linger briefly.

Old Perth Palo Cortado is a prime example of a well-functioning young whisky. Upon consumption, you get an explosion of flavor, only to have it disappear shortly after. It's a whisky that can handle a little experimentation. Adding an ice cube to a tumbler glass on a hot summer day in the garden won't ruin the experience, as the focus is on individual powerful notes. Of course, it will be somewhat subdued in its bold impression, and I would naturally recommend experimenting with how best to enjoy a glass of Old Perth Palo Cortado. From the Glencairn glass to a refreshing summer cocktail.
