Glendronach, 21 years of Parliament - Blog post by Steven Kramme

Glendronach, 21 years of Parliament - Blog post by Steven Kramme

Blog post by Steven Kramme

Glendronach is a Highland whisky brand that has been producing single malt whisky since 1826. The distillery is located in the Forgue Valley, near Huntly in Aberdeenshire. The distillery has a rich history and a distinctive taste. This has earned Glendronach a loyal following among whisky enthusiasts around the world.

The distillery sources its barley from local farms and uses water from the Dronac Burn, which flows through the hills above the distillery. The whisky is distilled in copper pot stills and matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. One of the key factors that distinguishes Glendronach whisky is the use of sherry casks. These casks are sourced from the Jerez region of Spain, where they are used to store sherry. When the casks arrive at the distillery, they are cleaned and then filled with freshly produced spirit. The whisky is left to mature in the casks for quite a few years, absorbing the rich, fruity and spicy flavors of the sherry. The result is a whisky with a deep, rich color, a complex aroma and a sweet, spicy taste with notes of raisins, figs and toffee. If you like whisky, Glendronach is definitely worth a try.
Their Glendronach 21 Year Parliament is a fantastic example of what they do so well at Glendronach. This whisky has been on my bucket list for a long time. I've heard about it often, as it's probably what you'd call a classic sherry bomb. When you pour the whisky into the glass, you really notice the beautiful color. Swirled around in the glass, you can also sense the oil in the whisky.

Thenose: A rather intense scent hits you right away. You can quickly identify the different notes in the whisky. Dates, raisins, figs, coffee, vanilla and nuts are some of the things that stand out the most to me. A whisky that is clear and easy to decode. It smells great without being "too much".

Pallet: The flavor is super intense and just confirms what you've just smelled. The whisky is 48% alc. and that's good, because it makes a big difference that it's not watered down. Your brain can almost explode at the thought of this cask strength whisky. Lovely flavor that starts at the front of the mouth and finishes at the back of the throat.

Finish: Nice long finish that just lingers in the mouth. Age definitely has a big influence on this. The fact that it has such a long finish is the highlight of this whisky for me. I feel like it ties a nice bow on the whole experience of the whisky.

There is no doubt in my mind that I think this is a fantastic whisky. One of the best in my opinion. It lives up to the rather high expectations I had for it. Everything about this whisky is good, from the story, to the bottle, to the color, to the smell, to the taste, to the finish. A total experience. The only minus I can see is the price, which is probably also the reason why I haven't tasted it before. I would recommend that you go together and share a bottle. You won't regret it.
