The story dates back to 1761, when Thomas Dakin first developed the recipe. The Dakin family built a still where botanicals hang above the spirit rather than sitting in it, a method still used for the iconic blue bottle today.

    Expert's description

Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin is an English London Dry Gin distilled through vapour infusion and bottled at 40%.

The gin launched in 1987 and introduced a vapour infusion method, where neutral spirit is evaporated three times in a Carter Head still and drawn through a mesh basket of ten botanicals, rather than boiled together with them.

The ten botanicals, including almond, lemon peel, liquorice, juniper, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia, cubeb and grains of paradise, give the gin a lighter, more floral character than gins distilled the traditional way in a copper pot still.

The method preserves volatile, delicate floral aromas better, making Bombay Sapphire one of the most widely used gins in cocktail bars around the world.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is light and floral with juniper and citrus, backed by a delicate herbal sweetness from liquorice.

    Palate

The palate is soft and balanced with juniper up front, spiced coriander and a nutty tone from almond.

    Finish

The finish is clean and light, with a last trace of orris root and citrus.
