There is almost always wind down at the southern end of Arran. Two fields at Bellevue Farm grow the barley, Lochranza in the north makes the spirit, and between them lies an island that went more than 150 years without a legal distillery. Now batch two has arrived, and this time it runs on a different barley variety.
Expert description
Arran Barley 10 year Batch 002 is an Island Single Malt Whisky matured in first fill bourbon casks and bottled at 50% ABV.
The whisky was distilled and matured at Lochranza on the Isle of Arran by Isle of Arran Distillers, and bottled in 2026. The barley is Concerto, grown at Bellevue Farm by the Currie family, who have worked the land for six generations. Arran normally buys its barley as malt from maltings on the Scottish mainland and mills it on site in Lochranza.
Batch 001 used the Optic variety and was matured in a mix of first fill bourbon and sherry casks. Batch 002 spent its whole life in first fill bourbon casks, and you can taste it: more vanilla and biscuity spice, less sherry.
18,000 bottles were filled. It is a recurring release, with a new batch each year, and every edition shifts with the harvest, the barley variety, the casks and the volume. The whisky is non-chill filtered and has no added colour.
Tasting notes
Nose
Fresh herbs and light citrus come first, followed by soft vanilla sweetness and a touch of aniseed.
Palate
Ginger biscuits and vanilla with citrus on top. The texture is thick and slightly oily, and it pulls the fruit further across the tongue.
Finish
Rich and warming, with a little aniseed and sweet spice.
