A guide to Whiskymessen - Blog post by whisky blogger Steven Kramme

A guide to Whiskymessen - Blog post by whisky blogger Steven Kramme
Blog post by Steven Kramme, February 2025

It is nearly time for Whiskymessen, and I am going again this year. With good friends, of course. So here are a few recommendations and some advice on how to get the most out of the fair.

1. The fair opens at 10:00 and closes at 18:00. That can make for a rather long day. So my first piece of advice is to have a proper breakfast. Really lay a good foundation for what is coming during the day.

2. Once the doors open, get tasting. There are a great many exhibitors and it can look overwhelming when you walk in. But start somewhere and work your way through the fair calmly. My second recommendation is to ask the exhibitors some questions, especially all the brand ambassadors. They are all wildly passionate about whisky and always willing to talk about and explain their product. For me it is the interaction between the exhibitors and the guests that is the best part. See the programme for the day here. Listen to our podcast here:
3. The third thing I would recommend is dropping by the exclusive bar in Hall 2. You can of course go exploring among the many rare whiskies, but for me this is where I go to taste the fair malt. A whisky bottled specially for the fair. This year it is a 12 year old Inchgower from the independent bottler Signatory Vintage. I will be there at 15:00 and you are very welcome to come and raise a glass.

4. If you have been to the fair before and feel you have tasted a lot of it already, I would clearly recommend a masterclass. There are quite a few to choose from this year. A small tip is the HSG Whisky masterclass. It is not particularly expensive and you get a bottle of whisky plus a voucher towards buying whisky at the HSG stand.

5. I would also recommend drinking something other than whisky at the fair. I drink a lot of bottled water myself. It means you have the energy for the whole day and do not run out of steam. Do not skip a good lunch either. Last year there were roast pork sandwiches and they were really good, so I hope they are back this year. They get a recommendation from me.

6. The last piece of advice is not to drink too much. There is an enormous amount to taste and you really can get drunk. But it is a lot more fun to stay conscious and have some great experiences with your friends. See the online catalogue with the 1,800+ samples here

So enjoy the good atmosphere, the friendly people and the fantastic whisky.

Have a great fair.
