Blogpost by Thomas Heie Nielsen

Danish A Clean Spirit is up to something really delicious and interesting. In addition to their wild and geeky SKUNK rum series, which currently includes a good handful of unaged power pot still rum at 69%, as well as a couple of editions of barrel-aged SKUNK rum on the nice side of 60%, they also have a more, shall we say, family-friendly series.

They call it Ron Sostenible. "Ron" is the Spanish word for rum, and "sostenible" closely resembles the English "sustainable," which means, of course, sustainable in Danish. And sustainability is precisely what it's all about at A Clean Spirit.

UNs World goals
A Clean Spirit lives up to 3 of the UNs World Goals:
World Goal No. 8: Decent jobs and economic growth
World Goal No. 12: Responsible consumption and production
World Goal No. 13: Climate efforts

A Clean Spirit works with 4 different kinds of sustainability:

Green sustainability

It's about a sustainable value chain all the way from raw materials to the production of rum and to climate-friendly transportation and packaging. The rum is produced at one of the world's most sustainable distilleries in the Dominican Republic, where all organic material and wastewater from the fermentation process are piped out to the distillery's own sugar cane fields, where it serves as organic fertilizer for the new sugar cane. The rum is sailed from the Dominican Republic, where it is produced, to Denmark by sailing ship, without the use of motor power. This minimizes the carbon footprint as much as possible. 96% of the bottle itself is made from recycled glass, and the label is made from cotton

Social sustainability

A Clean Spirit operates a business with a strong commitment to social and local responsibility. This extends to the employees at the distillery in the Dominican Republic as well as the local community, all of whom benefit from the distillery's production, methods, and value creation. All CO² emissions from the fermentation process are captured and stored in pressure tanks. It is then recycled and used to carbonate soft drinks at the local soda factory. A portion of the proceeds from this goes towards charity, such as school operation and further education, enabling employees to become skilled and certified in their competencies, education, and craftsmanship.

Economic sustainability.
A Clean Spirit aims to demonstrate that transitioning to a more sustainable approach throughout the entire production and product cycle can lead to a positive balance on a green bottom line.

Creative sustainability
A Clean Spirit's mindset is consistently innovative, creative, and thinks well outside the box with a focus on sustainability without compromising on flavorful and delicious quality products.

Ron Sostenible Blanco 40%

You can thus enjoy Ron Sostenible with a clear conscience. Let's taste it. The first rum I taste is Ron Sostenible Blanco 40%.

Aroma: A beautiful floral impression greets the nose. It's like a big bouquet of freshly picked wild field flowers. Behind the bouquet of flowers are notes of freshly squeezed lime juice, vanilla, a touch of sweet Finnish licorice, and lightly spiced oak. A delightful and pleasant aroma that alludes to a mild and florally slightly sweet gin with a neutral tonic. A very intriguing scent.

Taste: The taste is also a big bouquet of freshly picked field flowers. Very floral and delightful. There is citrus, a soft and restrained natural sweetness, and a discreet fresh acidity at the end. There is a lightness, purity, and clarity to the distillate, and the rum comes across as smooth, pleasant, drinkable, fresh, and almost effervescent. The pure sugar cane juice from which the rum is produced imparts a delightful fresh lightness to the flavor.

Conclusion: Ron Sostenible Blanco 40% is an extremely drinkable white rum. Everyone can enjoy it both in terms of taste and price. It is truly a quality product, and I am impressed by how much great flavor can be achieved in an affordable, eco-friendly white rum. The rum is made from pure sugar cane juice and is fully tropical aged for 12 months in the Dominican Republic in American ex-bourbon barrels. The color is then extracted. No sugar is added to the rum. It's a really good rum that stands out from many others in the category. Recommended for Mojito, Daiquiri, and Cuba Libre.

Ron Sostenible 8 år 40%

It was the blanco, the white rum. Now it's time for a dark rum. The older brother, Ron Sostenible 8 years 40%.

Aroma: A delightful scent of caramel, vanilla, dried apricot and fig, sweet pear juice, orange peel, and lightly spiced oak. I also detect a hint of eucalyptus. Very pleasant aroma. It smells sweet, soft, and very appealing and delicious.

Taste: My initial thought is that this is one of the best Spanish-style rums at 40% that I've tasted in a long time. It has a creamy and delicious note of Nesquik. Fresh fruit, especially pear and peach, but also caramel, spices, vanilla, and orange peel. Lovely richness with a touch of freshness and acidity at the end.

Conclusion: Ron Sostenible 8 years 40% is a superb dark rum with a strong sipping potential. Like its white brother Blanco, it's made from pure sugar cane juice and then aged for 8 years in a tropical climate in American ex-bourbon barrels. 18 grams of sugar per liter have been added. This rum is excellent for a Dark 'n Stormy or a Mai Tai.

Ron Sostenible Triple Cask 8 year 43%

Now it's time for the last rum in this round, Ron Sostenible Triple Cask 8 years 43%.

Aroma: The aroma seems like a slightly drier, spicier, and more "grown-up" version of the standard 8-year edition. The scent notes from the 8-year edition are present, but in a drier and more elegant manner. There are dried fruits, including figs, dates, raisins, a bit of orange peel, and lightly spiced oak. The aroma is more complex and spiced.

Taste: Just like on the nose, the taste is more complex and mature. The rum doesn't come across as alcoholic in any way, but it feels like the rum has a slightly higher alcohol content than it actually does. This is a positive aspect. There's also a bit of mild and lightly spiced fresh pipe tobacco and leather on the nose. If you're into the Spanish style and want to move away from the sweet while still enjoying a high-quality rum, this is a great choice.

Conclusion: Ron Sostenible Triple Cask 8 years 43% is made from pure sugar cane juice and has matured for at least 8 years in American ex-bourbon barrels in a tropical climate. Subsequently, the rum has received a cask finish in both ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. This has made the rum both smooth and drinkable, of high taste quality, and complex enough that you almost hesitate to make cocktails with it. But I still think you should give it a try. The rum has had 20 grams of sugar per liter added, but it actually comes across as relatively dry, spiced, complex, and elegant.

Psst... as a bonus, I have a little teaser for you. There's a Ron Sostenible 12-year Cognac cask on the way. I don't have information yet about how long of the 12 years it has spent in the Cognac cask, but it is indeed 12 years old. Like the other rums, it is made from pure sugar cane juice and fully tropical-aged. The rum has had 18 grams of sugar added.

Ron Sostenible 12 years Cognac cask has notes of leather, mild and lightly spiced pipe tobacco, milk chocolate, orange peel, dry apricot, dates, and raisins. It is very delicious in its category. You should be excited for when it arrives.
