    Distillery Bottling - Moonshine
This is the first release from Kingsbarns, owned by the Wemyss family. An elegant, fruity, and floral spirit, this is already showing great potential

    The story about moonshine
A 1920s, prohibition style white dog spirit from the UK, packed full of flavour despite its clarity - great as a cocktail ingredient or sipped.

Inspired by the moonshine produced in America during Prohibition, Bootlegger is a delicious unaged spirit which is meant to be enjoyed neat or in cocktails.

The history of Moonshine Whiskey or Corn whiskey goes back hundreds of years. However, it was in the years 1920-1933 that Moonshine whiskey really had its heyday. In 1920, the United States introduced the "the noble experiment" which prohibited the distillation of strong spirits. However, this law was met with great resistance and many people began producing whiskey secretly outside the system.

The illegal whiskey was distributed at night in the moonlight along small country roads, hence the name Moonshine.
There was a huge demand for the illegal whiskey at the time, and the mafia quickly entered the market. This meant that in 1925, a historic amount of moonshine whiskey was sold underground in Chicago, New York and Atlanta. The law prohibiting the distillation and sale of strong spirits was repealed in 1933 and in just 13 years, Moonshine whiskey had become a legend across the USA.
Bootlegging Moonshine - while stocks last

Moonshine is synonymous with illegally produced spirits.

Moonshine was of course a 'big brand' during Prohibition in the USA - it was the only way to get hold of spirits. The only alternative was to take the consequences and travel to Canada, Mexico or Cuba to enjoy spirits, drinks and cocktails there.

However, the concept existed long before and even today - in Denmark we call it moonshine.

The characteristic of Moonshine was a 'coarse-grained' distillation and that it was important to quickly erase the traces. Aging was therefore out of the question, and the spirit did not achieve the softness and flavor notes of, for example, spices, nuts and caramel that aging in oak barrels would have given it.

The name Moonshine comes, of course, from the fact that the distillation often took place outdoors at night in 'moonlight'. Bootlegging refers to the brave men and women who brought the spirit to consumers in pocket labels hidden in their boot shafts.

From the USA, we have bootlegged two versions of legal moonshine.

    Georgia Moon Corn Whiskey

Whiskey from Kentucky distilled solely from corn and less than 30 days old - a good example of how moonshine tasted in its time. For authenticity, it is delivered and sold in jam jars. 40% alcohol by volume.

Georgia Moon is crystal clear with a penetrating aroma of sour likør (sour as in lime/lemon) and sweet corn.

With an age of less than thirty days!

Bottled in a Mason jar, this is supposed to be reminiscent of moonshine (AKA corn likker, AKA white lightning, AKA white dog, AKA liver varnish), and it does a good job.

Other snobs who expect their whiskey to be aged might have turned up their nose upon seeing the less than 30 days old label.

Georgia Moon is clear, and upon twisting off the cap is a potent tang of sour liquor, followed by the smell of sweet corn.
