    Colheita Port

Hutcheson displays its strongest side in the production of charming Ruby Ports and excellent Tawny Ports, and last but certainly not least, the fantastic Colheitas.

    Info on Colheita Port Wine:

This is a Tawny port from a specific vintage, unlike the Tawny, which is a blend of different vintages. This vintage Tawny is aged for at least 7 years in casks before being filtered, bottled, and ready for sale - even ready to drink as soon as you leave the Whisky.dk store.

The bottle displays the vintage of the grape and the bottling year. For those of us who geek out a bit about what we serve, the Colheita category is filled with exciting variations for every occasion and every dish.

Often, Colheita remains in the cask even after the "obligatory" 7 years but is monitored by the IVDP (Port Wine Institute) to ensure continued good taste and quality. There are examples of vintages that have spent more than 60 years in the cask - longer than we've been around at Whisky.dk - so Colheita bottles are not meant for long-term storage, evident by the short cork in the bottles. Young Colheita bottles can withstand a couple of years on the shelf, but they can be consumed around the purchase date. An exquisite detail is that it can remain open for almost a couple of months without significantly affecting the taste. Store it cool. The taste is described as having a lot of sweetness and being more nutty than fruity, and the longer it has been on the cask, the smoother and rounder the taste becomes. It's an excellent dessert wine because its rich sweetness pairs perfectly with other sweet treats.

The extended cask aging makes the Colheita nutty in color and light, much like a really good Tawny, and perhaps that's what makes this type of port wine considered a specialty among the Portuguese - and since all port wine is made in Portugal, we're pretty convinced they know what they're talking about. Just like us at Whisky.dk. We look forward to introducing you to your next Colheita Port Wine.
