|Bruichladdich - 100% Islay|
In 1994 the Bruichladdich distillery closed, the workers were fired, and the machinery was left to the moody weather of the Hebrides - there was only a weak hope of revival. But in 2001, under new private ownership and after a thorough renovation of the distillery, “the old lady could dance again”.
The distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, whom had inherited a sum of money from their late father. Making use of over a hundred years of know-how, the young brothers designed a hypermodern distillery, specifically to be able to produce the purest alcohol.
Today Bruichladdich Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the only independent distillery on the island of Islay, and one of just eight independent distilleries in all of Scotland. At the same time, it is a modern and innovative company which has dedicated itself 100% to producing Premium Single Malt Whisky in the highest quality. Bruichladdich is most known for its delicate, sophisticated, rounded and light whisky, its ultra-modern and eye-catching packaging and its experimental, independent and unique way of doing things. This innovative strategy and profiling seems to fall in line with the wishes of consumers, since Bruichladdich has been the fastest growing Single Malt brand every single year since 2001, and it is currently the 11th best selling Single Malt in Great Britain and the 19th best selling Single Malt in the world.
Natural Top Quality for 140 Years
Bruichladdich is a completely natural whisky without added dyes and other additives. The whisky is ‘non-chill filtered’ - which means that all the natural oils of the whisky are preserved. This results in a much softer and rounder whisky with more shape and body. In the same sense Bruichladdich is 100% handmade and is exclusively produced after old craftsmanship’s traditions and on the original machinery from 1881 - when the distillery was opened. In no way are computers or newer machinery used in the production process.
Bruichladdich is the only distillery on the island of Islay, which tabs its whisky on the island by use of the island’s local and natural spring-water. It is furthermore the only distillery which buys their barley from the local landowners. In 2009, about 30% of the collective barley used in production was from the local farmers.
The distillery is completely dedicated to quality and as a part of this dedication they use casks from some of the most highly considered vineyards for further storage/development of the whisky. Nome examples include: Chateau d’Yquem, Chateau Margaux, Chateaux Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafleur, Vega Sicilia, Ridge Zinfandel.
This results in some extraordinarily interesting whiskeys - by using casks like these to re-store whiskeys from bourbon-casks, the whiskeys are infused with complex aromas, tasteful nuances and fantastic colors.
At the same time Bruichladdich also offers a variation of different styles. Their portfolio ranges from the traditional lightly smoked whisky, through a selection of medium smoked whiskeys and over to include the worlds most smoked Single Malt Whisky.

What does your work at Bruichladdich consist of?
My role at Bruichladdich is to manage the daily production. That can mean anything from buying barley directly from the farmers - either on Islay or on the mainland of Scotland - to handling the logistics of the drying, storage and malting of the barley before it arrives at the distillery. I am also responsible for finding and buying barley of the highest quality from around the world. As Distillery Manager I spend a lot of time arranging special tours and tastings for visitors of the distillery. Though - my most important job is to ensure the quality of all the spirits that we make.
What do you like the most about your job?
Meeting people from around the world and being responsible for making good whiskies as Bruichladdich’s.
Which Bruichladdich brand is your favorite?
I’ll say, it depends a lot on my mood, but on a daily basis it’s gotta be Laddie Ten.
Which interesting things can you say about Bruichladdich in regard to your job?
We’re very traditional at Bruichladdich and we still use manpower when distilling our whiskies. This is the way that has been passed on for generations and I am personally very proud to be one of the few who has been taught the olden skills. It is knowledge I look forwards to passing on to the next generation. The method of using manpower is becoming more and more rare in Scotland, where the automation in the process is slowly taking over - but for me automation takes away the personal “touch” from the whisky production.

There is Bruichladdich in the salami!
Jan Laursen, who is a breeder of highland cattle by Skanderborg, has found the perfect match of Scottish meat and Scottish whisky in his new salami. Bruichladdich Organic5YO is mixed with the meat from organically raised highland cattle and has produced an incredibly popular taste in a through-and-through Scottish salami. “Bruichladdich Organic 5YO was the ideal choice for this salami,” says Jan Laursen “- since my cattle raising takes place organically, and then the creamy taste of the Bruichladdich whisky has a good taste to balance the meat”. 1881 – Barnett Harvey builds the distillery with money left by his brother William III to his three sons William IV, Robert and John Gourlay. The Harvey family already owns the distilleries Yoker and Dundashill.
1886 – Bruichladdich Distillery Company Ltd is founded and reconstruction commences.
1889 – William Harvey becomes Manager and remains on that post until his death in 1937.
1929 – Temporary closure.
1936 – The distillery reopens.
1938 – Joseph Hobbs, Hatim Attari and Alexander Tolmie purchase the distillery for £23 000 through the company Train & McIntyre.
1938 – Operations are moved to Associated Scottish Distillers.
1952 – The distillery is sold to Ross & Coulter from Glasgow.
1960 – A. B. Grant buys Ross & Coulter.
1961 – Own maltings ceases and malt is brought in from Port Ellen.
1968 – Invergordon Distillers take over.
1975 – The number of stills increases to four.
1983 – Temporary closure.
1993 – Whyte & Mackay buys Invergordon Distillers.
1995 – The distillery is mothballed in January.
1998 – In production again for a few months, and then mothballed.
2000 – Murray McDavid buys the distillery from JBB Greater Europe for £6.5 million.
2001 – Jim McEwan from Bowmore becomes Production Director. The first distillation (Port Charlotte) is on 29th May and the first distillation of Bruichladdich starts in July. In September the owners’ first bottlings from the old casks are released, 10, 15 and 20 years old.
2002 – The world’s most heavily peated whisky is produced on 23rd October when Octomore (80ppm) is distilled.
2003 – Bruichladdich becomes the only distillery on Islay bottling on-site. It is awarded Distillery of the Year for the second time and launches the golf series, Links, 14 years old.
2004 – Second edition of the 20 year old (nick-named Flirtation) and 3D, also called The Peat Proposal, are launched.
2005 – Several new expressions are launched - the second edition of 3D, Infinity (a mix of 1989, 1990, 1991 and Port Charlotte), Rocks, Legacy Series IV, The Yellow Submarine and The Twenty ‘Islands’.
2006 – Included in a number of new releases in autumn is the first official bottling of Port Charlotte; PC5.
2007 – New releases include Redder Still, Legacy 6, two new Links, PC6 and an 18 year old.
2008 – More than 20 new expressions including the first Octomore, Bruichladdich 2001, PC7, Golder Still and two sherry matured from 1998.
2009 – New releases include Classic, Organic, Black Art, Infinity 3, PC8, Octomore 2 and X4+3 - the first quadruple distilled single malt.
2010 – PC Multi Vintage, Organic MV, Octomore/3_152, Bruichladdich 40 year old are released.
